Nicholas Sparks grew up in several homes. As a child, he lived in Minnesota, Los Angeles, and Nebraska before the age of eight. His family finally settled down in Fair Oaks, California, where he lived through out high school. He was valedictorian of his class when he graduated from Bella Vista High School in 1984. He received a full scholarship for track to the University of Notre Dame. During his first year of college, at track he broke the record as part of a relay team, but injured himself and spent the following summer recovering.
His parents both passed away, his father in 1996 and his mother in 1989. He had one sister that passed away in 2000. He has a close relationship with his brother and one of his novels is about that close bond: "Three Weeks with my Brother."
He met his wife, Catherine, during spring break before he graduated with high honors in 1988. He majored in Business Finance. Nicholas and Catherine got married in July of 1989. They have three sons and twin daughters named Miles, Ryan, Landon, Lexie, and Savannah.
