Natural, Holistic Health for Children

Below are some symptoms.  I am not a doctor.  I'm a 25 year old adult that was diagnosed with autism when I was 14.  Autism is usually diagnosed within the first 2 to 5 years of life.  Early diagnosis and early intervention and treatment is important.

The difference between Autism and Asperser is children with Asperser start talking at a normal age and is usually diagnosed later.

Every person with autism is different.  Not all persons with autism will show all or any of these symptoms.  This is to be used as a guide and not considered as medical advice.

bulletNon verbal, can't talk, can't communicate, or have trouble communicating.  Some children with autism may point to objects when they want something instead of ask.  Some children may scream aloud when they can't communicate when they either want something or are struggling with communicating.  Some children can't ask for help when they need help.
bulletCan't express themselves.
bulletDoesn't show emotion.
bulletCan't understand pain.  Doesn't feel pain.  Doesn't cry when hurt.  Doesn't cry when spanked.  I remember my father telling me he spanked me as a baby for something and I didn't cry at all.  Of course they'll cry when they're hungry, or had an accident in their pants, but if they cry for no reason, then there may be something else wrong with them.
bulletCan't determine between hot and cold.
bulletSpeech problems, or trouble with language.  Mispronounce words.  Examples: When I tried to say the word "think", it would sound like "sink."  When I tried to say "important", I would say "importment."
bulletTrouble with being potty trained.  I don't think I got potty trained until I was 6-7 years old.  I remember peeing in my pants in Kindergarten and once in the Third grade.
bulletNot being social, not playing with other kids.  I remember as a child in elementary school during recess I would always swing by myself on the swings even when nobody else was swinging next to me and I never ran around the playground like the other kids.
bulletPlaying with toys oddly, playing with objects as toys.
bulletStaring at an object, thing, or toy too much.
bulletShy around other people.  Trouble in social situations.
bulletDoesn't see gestures from other people.  Doesn't understand social cues, such as being smiled, or winked at.
bulletAlone in their own world.  Keep to themselves.
bulletLack of or no eye contact, avoiding eye contact, looking down, or the other direction when being spoken to.
bulletRepeating phases that they like, either they heard them from other people, the radio, or TV.
bulletCan't stand being touched or hugged.  (I don't have that problem anymore.)
bulletDoesn't understand facial expressions or tone of voice.  Can't tell if someone is mad or upset.  Example: Would say something mean or not polite to a person that is already upset.
bulletLack of smell, doesn't notice a bad smell.  I usually can't tell that a smell is bad until after somebody says something about it.  It's like my nose doesn't work correctly or my mind doesn't tell my nose that there's a bad smell.
bulletCan't take change in everyday habits, likes routine.
bulletNot recognizing familiar faces.  I once read autistic children may not even recognize their own mom at age 6!  I remember when I was in the 6th grade I at first didn't recognize someone because he started wearing glasses.
bulletSlow in comprehending, or can't comprehend.  Slow at understanding, or can't understand when spoken to.  Needs things repeated.  But only repeat if asked to.
bulletCan't face the public.  Gets scared of people.
bulletNot understanding what's going on in the world or life.
bulletTemper tantrums for no apparent reason.
bulletRocking or hand flapping.  (I may of hand flapped when I was a baby.)
bulletNot acting like a normal child.
bulletDisobey, disrespectful, rude, or saying something not polite.
bulletBeing obsessive.
bulletUnusual, strange, weird, or odd behaviors.
bulletSays strange, or weird stuff.
bulletEverything must be in the right place.  Example: Everything in bedroom must be in the same spot.  (I remember once when I was a child, I couldn't stand if something was out of place.  I'm pretty laid back now about that issue.)
bulletSeem organized.
bulletWants to get his/her own way.
bulletLikes numbers.
bulletTakes everything literally.
bulletDoesn't understand jokes or phases.

Some symptoms from the National Institute of Mental Health

bulletDoes not babble, point, or make meaningful gestures by 1 year of age
bulletDoes not speak one word by 16 months
bulletDoes not combine two words by 2 years
bulletDoes not respond to name
bulletLoses language or social skills
bulletPoor eye contact
bulletDoesn't seem to know how to play with toys
bulletExcessively lines up toys or other objects
bulletIs attached to one particular toy or object
bulletDoesn't smile
bulletAt times seems to be hearing impaired

Children with autism may seem rude and not able to behave kids, but they can't help it.  Something inside of them is bothering them and they have to let it out.  It's very hard to discipline an autistic child.  In my opinion, you should avoid disciplining an autistic (or related disorder) child.

Children with autism are not spoiled brats.  Spanking an autistic child doesn't usually help, because they don't know why their in trouble or what they've done wrong.

Order David Kirby's book "Evidence of Harm" about the chilling possibility that a vaccine additive may be fueling an apparent epidemic of autism, ADD, speech delay and other disorders in children

The symptoms of autism and mercury poisoning are very close.  I recommend all parents to test for mercury and heavy metals.  Check the DAN list on the Autism Research Institute website to find a doctor near you.  If you have a child with ADHD/ADD, Speech Delays, Developmental Delays, Learning Disability, Behavior Problems, Special Needs, Epilepsy, or if you're just curious, it won't hurt to contact a DAN doctor or order a hair test from BodyBalance, Great Plains Laboratory, Doctor's Data Inc., or other lab.

Most parents of children with autism noticed the symptoms after receiving vaccinations.  Parents can show their child on video tape and photos of their child acting normal before their vaccines.  Babies would cry or scream for no reason after receiving each vaccination.  Toxic metals, especially mercury, are a known cause of neurological problems.  No amount of any toxic metal is safe, especially for babies.

If you vaccinate your child, It's important to make sure their child receives mercury free and Thimerosal free vaccines.  You'll have to ask your doctor or pediatrician, but not all doctors know, so ask for the packaging insert of the vaccine.  Click here to read more about the vaccines, mercury, and autism issue.  Click here for some links.

I sometimes seem to have an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and also unable to stay on a task or finish a project.  I daydream too much!  I like pushing numbers on a calculator.

My bright side of autism is being good on the computer (I'm a computer wizard!) and math, it was my favorite subject in school, but I'm never as good as Rain Main!  Click here to read a little about the computer certificates I earned.  That page also includes the TV shows I like and few other interests.

I read people with autism may be able to use the computer better then other people and may understand programming language better.

I may have a good sense of humor and laugh quite a bit, or even laugh at things that are not funny, or things that other people don't see as funny.  I may also laugh at the wrong time, such as during a serious time, I may be laughing at the seriousness, or am think about something all together different in my head, and can't control the laugher during the serious moment.

I may appear to be lazy and not do what I'm suppose to do, or what needs to be done.  I may sleep 12 hours some nights, mostly sleeping in very late on Saturday mornings.  I remember times of going to bed at 10 p.m. Friday night and sleeping in till 12 noon, but I don't do that anymore.  I would say most of the time now I would try not to sleep more then 10 hours.

My mother just reminded me of having night terrors, sometimes 2 or 3 times in one night, and several nights, she even tape recorded a few.  She told me I was having them over "Scooby-do", which I find oddly, but I think I was.

Autistic people always think of things differently then a normal person.  They may appear to be weird or act weird, but they don't mean to.  The brains of people with autism see things in weird ways that a normal person doesn't see or understand what the autistic person sees.  The disorder takes away their verbal speaking and makes communicating in verbal words and sentences harder for them.  I was developmental delayed as a child and needed special help from my teachers and was in resource or special ed classes.  I probably wouldn't been able to do this website if I never started the dairy & wheat free diet.  Check out this page for more info!  Autistic kids often are sensitive to foods that can cause their behaviors.

People with autism process and respond to information in unique ways.  I read 30% may develop a seizure pattern at some period during life.  People with autism may have difficulties in concentration, processing, or anxiety.  Individuals with more severe challenges may require intensive support to manage the basic tasks and needs of living day to day.  Autistic kids may be mentally challenged.  Autistic kids or adults don't like to be told what to do.  That will make them mad.

Another symptom is sometimes not knowing or be bothered by what's hot and what's cold.  Sometimes when it's cold outside, I'll be out there with no coat and not seem to care because my mind doesn't feel that it's cold.  I remember I'll be out there putting up Christmas lights on the trees when it's cold and sometimes dark cause I want to get those lights up.  Same goes with hot!  I've read that autistic kids can touch a hot stove and NOT jump back and say ouch or anything.  They don't feel it.  But that's not true for me.

I wasn't officially diagnosed with autism until I was 14 years old when I was in the 7th grade in middle school because I was getting into too much trouble.  The principal wanted me to see a psychiatrist that diagnosed me with autism.  I was considered a "trouble maker" in middle school and also elementary school.

But I have had autism all my life because of my previous behaviors since Kindergarten.  I've seen and read in a evaluation report from the school psychologist when I was 4 years old that I was not only global developmental delay, but imply some autistic-like behaviors. Figures!  (Of course I don't remember that or anything from my earlier years of life.)

As my parents told me, I didn't start talking until I was 5 years old.  At first I thought this was normal because I've heard on one of the old Andy Griffith shows that "Goober Pyle" didn't start talking until he was 5 years old too.  It was the color show where "Aunt Bee" was taking care of a baby for a week and every time she tried to hold the baby, the baby cried.  Anyway, Goober came over one day with some toys for the baby to play with and he mentioned in these words: "I didn't start talking until I was 5 years old, I guess I didn't have anything to say."  Those were his exact words from the show.  I've seen those shows so many times.

I have some type of mild autism so the kids with more severe autism would sadly start talking later or even never. I seen a movie (not thinking about Rain Man) about an autistic child that was 12 or 13 and he couldn't talk and the mother had to shout at him, it's not that he wasn't listening, it's that he couldn't hear her because he was in his own world and it's not that he didn't want to listen or refuse to listen, that's just the way autism is. I read some persons with autism may appear to have mental retardation, a behavior disorder, problems with hearing, or odd behavior.

Here's my opinion of people with autism or related disorder:

There is a bad connection between the brain and the mouth in autistic children.  I want to communicate and talk, but that's a challenge for me.  I have things to say sometimes, but don't say them, that's the bad connection between the autistic brain and mouth in autistic children.  The proof of that is I can communicate on the internet by using e-mail, or instant message because I'm just typing on the keyboard and not having to speak.  It's like autistic people may seem deaf.

Other symptoms I have of an autistic adult or teenager is pacing back and forth (hyperactive) and sleeping in too late on Saturday mornings, but being hyper and having too much on my mind at night! Autistic persons seems to worry about every little thing and ask too many questions. I remember when I was a teenager when I was excited about something really bad and would pace back and forth in my room and actually pee in my pants, lol (laughing out loud). I pace in my room when I can't sleep, like when I was a baby and couldn't sleep I cried and woke everybody up and wanted to play, but now I pace in my room quietly, lol.

Also I have trouble at spelling, slow at reading and I still am, had trouble learning in school, trouble with homework, not getting good grades, in school before I started the diet I got C's mostly - after I started the diet I got B's and some A's.  I remember in school I would write short sentences, but that has changed now as you can see from this website.  My mom said she couldn't believe how much I can do now that I couldn't do when I was in grade and middle school (she had to help me a lot or even do my homework!), I guaranteed dairy poisoned my brain!  I felt several months after I started the diet my brain felt bigger!

Life is a struggle for people who suffer from any type of brain disorder.  In my experiences, I was bothered and picked on in school by the other students and I never liked that.  I always had to get that student back (like for example, if somebody threw a paper wad at me, I'll pick it up and throw it back), but most of the time when I was in middle school (7th grade) I was ALWAYS the one that got caught by the teacher and NOT the other student.  I also never liked being called names, annoying names, etc.
