I took computer classes at the Tennessee Technology Center in Shelbyville, Tennessee and earned 3 CompTIA certificates called:

bulletA+ (About computer hardware and Microsoft Windows)
bulletI-Net+ (About the internet and the web)
bulletNetwork+ (About how to network computers and how the internet works)

I also earned a Microcomputer Specialist Diploma in March, 2002 and a Network Specialist Diploma in June, 2003.

Since the fall of 2003, I've been taking college computer programming courses online from the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Courses in Fall of 2003 were:

bulletProgramming in Visual Basic  (Grade: A)
bulletProgramming in C++  (Grade: B)
bulletComputer Graphics  (Grade: B)

Courses in Spring of 2004 were:

bulletJava Programming I  (Grade: A)
bulletWeb Page Design and Development  (Grade: A)
bulletData Structures  (Grade: D)

Data Structures was advanced programming in C++ and was very hard.  Note: C++, Java, and Visual Basic are computer programming languages.

For the Summer of 2004 I took 1 course:

bulletJava II  (Grade: C)

Java II is java data structures in the java programming language, and as you can see above I didn't do too well in C++ Data Structures.  During the course (Java II) my grades were looking towards a D, but I guess I pulled it off at the end.

Courses in Fall of 2004 were:

bulletAdvanced Web Page/Site Design  (Grade: A)
bulletE-Commerce  (Grade: D)
bulletWeb Page Applications  (Grade: B)

Courses in Spring of 2005 were:

bulletDatabase Programming  (Grade: A)
bulletE-Commerce (repeat)  (Grade: A)
bulletIntroduction to Linux  (Grade: A)

At this point, I decided to go for an Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) with Professional Studies in Information Technology, since I lack only 5 courses.

Courses in Fall of 2005 were:

bulletEnglish Composition I  (Grade: B) - I wrote (actually typed) 5 essays!  My first one was about a few of my struggles as a child.  Click here to read it.
bulletGeneral Psychology  (Grade: C) - This was an interesting class.
bulletMusic Appreciation  (Grade: F) - When I first took this course I thought it was going to be just listening to music (classical) and telling my classmates what I thought, but actually it's a lot of textbook reading about the history of music and an exam over 3 chapters (100 pages).  The final grade was based on the average score of 5 exams.

Courses in Spring of 2006 are:

bulletFundamentals of Public Speaking  (Grade: B)
bulletMusic Appreciation (repeat)  (Grade: A)

A lot of universities and community colleges offer courses online.  Online courses are accessible 24/7 and are equal to courses in the classroom.  Most people probably take online courses for convenience, to avoid having to drive to class, to improve their career, etc.
