| Home | Data security is ensuring the data
is not corrupted in a secure location. Access is limited to ensure
privacy and protect personal information. There are a number of data
security technologies that help prevent unauthorized use of the data. Encryption is the process that data is encrypted on the hard disk drive or through the network or internet. A term called "Full Disk Encryption" or FDE can be in the form of software, hardware, or a combination of both. User authentication is the process of "sign in" or "log on" to gain access to a computer, network, or file. A password is usually used and assigned or created by users. A password may be required to be changed every 30 days depending on the organization's policy. A more secure type of password is a "one-time password." There are three types of one-time passwords. The first type uses a mathematical algorithm to generate a new password based on the previous. The second type is based on time-synchronization between the authentication server and the client providing the password. The third type also uses a mathematical algorithm and the new password is based on a challenge, such as a random number and a counter. Other user authentication technologies involve a smartcard and fingerprint. A smartcard is pocket-sized card with integrated circuits that process data. Smart cards can be used for identification and provides strong authentication for a log on to computers, laptops, data with encryption, etc. A fingerprint is an impression of a person's finger, which is used for identification. It's very unlikely for two people to have the same fingerprint, so by the use of biometrics, a fingerprint can be used to gain access to buildings or computers. |
